Slub - Self Titled Cassette

An interesting 1986/87 cassette only release from Melbourne band Slug. They featured multi-instrumentalist John Murphy (Assoviates, Orchestra of Skin and Bone, Hugo Klang, MaxQ, Ollie Ollson, SPK, Hugo Race, Whirlywirld, The Wreckery, Blood & Iron, Box the Jesuit and Whitehouse). There is an 'etc' after that as he wasn't only restricted to these bands/groups. Too many to mention I guess. He passed away in 2015.

The band also featured Vicky Riley on vocals and violin. She passed away in September 2012 at the Royal Darwin Hospital after being struck by a car while crossing the road on her bike.

Other people on the cassette are Chris Hughes, Peter Kenny, Sonke Rickertson, Paul Dalby, JP Kenny, Tony Wyzenbeck with two 'performers' listed (Ann Scott & Chris Coleman). I have no idea what is meant by 'performers'.

It was recorded by Simon Grounds. The art work for each cassette cover was hand printed so no two copies are alike.

The Runaways - Cherry Bomb 7'' (and filmclip!)

Ahhh, this took my breath away in the mid 70's. Could be one of my favorite rock clips of all time. It never ages.

Cherie Currie is an obvious character from this band. Her exploits as a Chainsaw wielding artist of late are legendary. Don't get me started on Kim Fowley, but we all know Joan Jett with her hit single 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll'. I'd call this a Big bang moment in the rock world.

Scapa Flow - At Home and Abroad 7''

1980 self released. Two M&M Gerber brothers (Mark and Michael) plus John O'Brien. Sydney band with as many twists and turns that you'd want in the external search for a perfect sound.

Scapa Flow - Endless Sleep 7''

Second release from 1980. Now on AuGoGo records. Unfortunately this is the last release. No idea what happened to the members after this.

And An A - Affirmation 12''

West Australian (Perth) band release from 1985.

These guys traveled a different path to most. Perth is well known as the world capital of covers bands - these guys were never going to let that happen.

My interest in their music was started when I heard that they had a 'disco krautrock industrial' sound. Obviously an offhand comment but not far off. I also went to school with the lead singer - Dave Kelsall.

And An A - Taken As Gospel 12''

1986 release and the band calls it quits. No idea if anyone went on to bigger and better things.

Rocks - You'r So Boring CD (1977-87)

I've included this compilation CD (same name as their first single/EP) because it contains many goodies: 'Pretty Vacant' cover version, tracks from the 'Swinging From The Trees' and 'Not So Humdrum' compilations, rehearsals and demos. Can't get better than that.

Rocks - You'r So Boring EP

Desert Rat - Home from the Front

Only one LP from this Melbourne rock band. Released in 1978. They also put out a single 'Need Your Love/Reaching For The Sky' but these two tracks are on the LP.

Most of the members were previously in Buster Brown and later enlisted the help of Skeeta Pereira (from Finch). They crawled to a standstill after this LP with Stephen Lazaros then moving onto the Punk/Thrash rock band Depression (dubbing himself 'Smeer' - as you do).

Skunks - Scratch 'n' Sniff EP

1982 Adelaide Punk. Utterly impossible to now find a copy of this - you'll have to make do with the mp3 download. Only 500 copies made. Contentious at the time as it contained the song ' Dance With The Fuhrer (Adolf's Last Dance)'.

Best described as a raunchy blend of bootboy-pop and terrace stomping spikey-topped anthems - the perfect soundtrack for the Aussie Oi brigade. Apparently there should be footage out there of them performing their last gig in '82. Can anyone help out with that? The VHS footage was titled 'This Is The Old, This Is The New'.

On Youtube, there is footage of the band doing 'I Hate Disco'. That's about it though.

The Saints - One Two Three Four

Second and often overlooked release from The Saints (1977). It slots in between '(I'm) Stranded' and 'Perfect Day'. I bet few of you realised that this even existed.

Get into it now.

My guess is that very few people out there have this - but many will want it. Only a mini album but the timing is ideal. Have you ever heard that word used to describe an album: 'Ideal'! Try this ....

Thorburn - Brick Wall 7''

Hmmm - how shall we go here! Euan could be best described as a Melbourne fringe dweller. How exactly does this (he) fit in?? Let's call this loony/loopy rock and roll - perhaps proto-punk. It's very DIY. Mr Thorburn now spends his time as a graphic artist. Well done fella. Very collectable. Released in 1979.

Proles - Police 7''

Rare Aussie Punk from 1979. The band consisted of Mark Chrisfield (vocals), Paul Greuders (bass, backing vocals) and brothers Darren (guitar, backing vocals) and Wayne Smith (drums). They were shortlived (Sept '77 to Feb '79) with this single recorded towards the end (and released after their disintegration).

Darren Smith would later surface in the Zorros, whose single on Au-Go-Go has already been blogged.

Celibate Rifles - But Jacques, The Fish EP

Ahhh, so good. Jeez, really got into this when it first came out. Dirty 'ol rock n' roll, Aussie style - doesn't come better than this (1982). The band name was typical Aussie humour - a pisstake on The Sex Pistols.

EMI custom records 1982 release. Aussie Punk but I don't know where 'Mixdown Recording Studios' were (no listing for them now). Was it Sydney, Melbourne etc??

The band members are just first names. Wish I knew more!

Tch Tch Tch split with Man & Machine - Split Single (Pop Art & The Bath)

Release from 1979. Tch Tch Tch (pronounced with three clicks) were what we would call experimental. Avant Garde. New Wave.... For many this translate into bleeps and bloops or artists that can't play their instruments. But I'm here not to pass judgement - just to say it existed and was a part of what I call Aussie Punk.

As for Eric Gradman and Man & Machine, well I'm certainly a fan of their music. Very much a part of that unique Aussie Punk sound. Released under Crystal Ballroom Records as a split single.

The Tellers - Flex

What a great album. Released in 1992 it's pure rock n roll. Brisbane band that featured the actor Damien Garvey. Now VERY hard to find and you'll find little or no reference to this band on the net. This blog entry aims to right that wrong.

The Tellers - Limited Movement

Second (and last) album, released in 1993. Around this time they also released the single 'One Brick At A Time' - but I do not have this. Obviously if someone out there is prepared to share the mp3 files, this would be much appreciated.

Damien Garvey hit the bigtime later with his acting career in 'Rake' and 'Jack Irish'.

Flying Calvittos - Goodbye You Spaghetti Punks EP

Classic Aussie Punk from 1979 but very few related to it on release. It was only those in the know that snapped it up - most probably the masses thought it was ethnic/world music or a joke single. How wrong they were. I can recall at the time thinking it was a bit odd but many said it was worth a listen. I did. I bought. It good. Very good.

Flying Calvittos - 26 Hundred Moons

Don't have. Sorry, but this is a request to anyone out there wanting to share the mp3's. Only 500 CD's made so it's way gone. It contains the tracks from the EP plus extras they did later on. Much later on.

Please help - I don't care whatever format. Uh oh, stop the press. Found it. On Discogs. Whooo Hoooo.

The bad news is, the chase was much better than the listening. I did not enjoy any of the tracks here outside of the original EP. This is a big WTF moment. However, at least we have it now and you can make your own judgement call.

Sweet Jayne - Self Titled (aka Ambigious Dirl) 7''

Sweet Jayne were a rock band - first and foremost. They played live regularly (700 plus gigs over 6 years). Original material was written by Chris Scheri and Cris Bonacci.

The first lineup (1977) were Cris Bonacci, Chris Scheri, Robyn Clarke and Sally Zylstra. Chris was on lead vocals and flute! Cris lead guitar. Male musicians John Zaffarese, Brendan O'Shea, Fab Versace and Billy George joined when Zylstra and Clarke left. The band split in 1983 after Mike Oldfield saw the band play live in Sydney and offered Chris and Cris airfares to London to work with him in the UK. The band released this 7'' single after winning the Yamaha Australasian Battle of the Bands in 1978.

There is also a cassette floating around with three songs ('Something To Believe In', 'Captives and 'Going Down'). I do not have this but drop dead keen to get the mp3's. Can anyone help out - please?

Sweet Jayne - Icarus 7''

This single was release in 1981 but the band split in '83 after Mike Oldfield saw the band play live in Sydney and offered Chris and Cris airfares to London to work with him in the UK.

Cris Bonacci joined Girlschool in 1985 and toured and recorded with the band for 10 years. She toured America with Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult and played guitar for Robert Plant. She also worked with Toyah Wilcox and Marc Almond and was manager and musical director for Samantha Fox for several years. Chris Scheri set up Recording Studio 7 in South Melbourne in 1986.
